Handheld GPS are mostly used by the hikers, cross-country skiers, campers and outdoor enthusiasts. It can help us from getting lost in an uninhabited area. But even though handheld GPS units are very useful in many ways there are few disadvantages that are involved with it.

1. The device can get interfered due to clouds and storm systems. There can be physical interference such as mountains, trees and skyscrapers which can lose the signal.
2. A handheld GPS unit mostly runs on batteries which can get exhausted. The units which have larger display screen can consume more battery power so we have carry additional batteries while traveling with the GPS unit.
3. Most of the handheld GPS units are available with fixed memory and can hold a little amount of information only. Upgrading the device can be done, but with additional cost.
4. A handheld GPS unit also needs to manually backtrack from the starting point and only expensive units are available with built-in feature that can automatically guide us to the right direction.
